What Is Original Medicare?

Original Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities. It’s made up of two main parts:

Part A and Part B

Original Medicare gives you the freedom to see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare—no referrals needed. However, it doesn’t cover everything. Most people add a Part D plan for prescriptions and consider supplemental coverage to help with out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and coinsurance.

Parts A & B

Part A

Hospital Insurance

Covers:

  • Inpatient hospital care: Semi-private room, meals, general nursing, and hospital services and supplies.Skilled nursing facility care (after a hospital stay)

  • Skilled nursing facility (SNF) care: After a qualifying 3-day inpatient hospital stay, covers room, board, and certain therapy services.

  • Hospice care: For those with a terminal illness, including pain relief, symptom management, and support services.

  • Limited home health care: Includes part-time skilled nursing care, physical therapy, or speech-language pathology, if medically necessary.

Part B

Medical Insurance

Covers:

  • Doctor visits and outpatient care: Primary care, specialists, outpatient surgery, and emergency room services.

  • Preventive services: Screenings (like mammograms and colonoscopies), vaccines (like flu and COVID-19), and annual wellness visits.

  • Diagnostic tests and imaging: Includes X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, lab work, and EKGs.

  • Durable Medical Equipment (DME): Includes walkers, wheelchairs, oxygen equipment, etc.

  • Home health care: Medically necessary part-time skilled nursing and therapy services.

However...

Medicare Parts A & B don't cover everything! And they're not the only parts of Medicare!
