Medicare Supplement Insurance

(Medigap)

What Is A Medicare Supplement?

A Medicare Supplement, also known as a Medigap plan, is a type of private insurance that helps pay for some of the healthcare costs not covered by Original Medicare (Parts A and B). These include deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance—expenses that can add up quickly, especially during a hospital stay or ongoing treatment. Medigap plans are designed to work alongside your Original Medicare, not replace it, and they offer peace of mind by reducing your out-of-pocket exposure. With a Medicare Supplement plan, your coverage becomes more predictable, stable, and easier to manage—making it a popular choice for those who want more control and fewer surprises in their healthcare spending.

How Does It Work?

Medicare Supplement plans work hand-in-hand with your Original Medicare coverage. When Medicare pays its share of an approved healthcare service, your Medigap plan automatically steps in to cover some or all of the remaining costs, depending on the plan you choose. These can include your Part A hospital deductible, Part B coinsurance, and even emergency medical care while traveling abroad in some plans.

All Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government, which means the benefits for each plan type (like Plan G or Plan N) are the same no matter which insurance company you buy from. The only differences are the monthly premium you pay and the level of customer service offered by the insurer.

It’s important to note that you must be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B to get a Medigap plan, and these plans only cover one person—so if you're married, your spouse will need a separate policy. Medigap does not include prescription drug coverage, so you'll need to enroll in a separate Part D plan for medications.

When Can I Enroll?

The best time to enroll in a Medigap plan is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period—a one-time, six-month window that starts when you’re 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this period, you have a guaranteed right to enroll in any Medigap plan available in your area without medical underwriting. This means you can’t be denied coverage or charged more due to pre-existing conditions.

If you miss this window, you may still apply for a Medigap plan later, but insurance companies can require health underwriting, deny your application, or charge you higher premiums—depending on your health and state rules. Some states offer additional enrollment protections, but it’s best to act during your initial eligibility window to ensure full access and the best rates.

What Types of Plans Are Available?

Medigap plans are standardized into lettered options, each offering a different level of coverage. The most popular plans include:

  • Plan G – The most comprehensive coverage available to new enrollees, covering nearly all out-of-pocket costs except the Part B deductible.

  • Plan N – A lower-premium option with great coverage, requiring small copays for doctor visits and ER visits, and does not cover the Part B deductible or excess charges.

  • Plan A, B, D, K, L, and M – Offer varying levels of coverage, typically with more cost-sharing and lower premiums.

Each plan type offers identical benefits nationwide, regardless of the insurance company, but premiums and additional perks (like customer support or household discounts) can vary. Not all plans are available in every state, and some plans, like Plan F, are only available to individuals who became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.
