When a person is on Medicare they basically have three options in terms of coverage. The options are:
1. Have Medicare parts A and B with no additional coverage. This is never recommended as the potential exposure to large out of pocket costs exists.
2. Have a Medicare Advantage program. This is better than having just Medicare A and B alone but still leaves the potential risk of large out of pocket costs. In addition you must stay within a network or use a provider that will accept your particular plan. Also, most MA plans require a referral to use a specialist.
3. Have Medicare A and B with a Medicare supplement. This is always the best in terms of overall coverage. There is little, if any financial exposure to the insured. There is no network restriction and no referrals required for using any specialist.
